As you may know, model horses have been collected since they were first produced. As with any hobby, local and regional clubs quickly sprang up to enable collectors to get together and talk about the models they loved and the ones they longed for. What makes model horse collecting unique is that these collectors took their hobby one step further. If "real" horses could compete in shows, they reasoned, why not their model counterpoints? The idea quickly took off, and today there are two very popular types of model horse shows, the live show and the photo show

Live Shows are the closest to "real" horse shows, with competitors bringing their horses to a central location where they compete in conformation and performance events. The models' condition, and that of its tack and equipment, is paramount. The BMHR and SMHR do not sponsor or hold live shows.

Photo Shows give model horse owners from around the world the chance to pit their models against those of fellow collectors. Photographs are painstakingly taken to show off the horse's best features and are then either postal mailed (snail-mail entries) or emailed (online entries) to the holder of the show. After the show is over, the postal mailed photos are returned to their owner (in the self-addressed, stamped envelope the owner provided) and are ready for their next competition. The BMHR and SMHR holds monthly online photo shows as well as an annual Grand Nationals.

To help make their models more correct to real horse standards, many collectors started to repaint or customize their models.  A Repaint model is exactly what it says.  It is repainted only, no changes are made to the original mold other than sanding of the seams, minor carving of ears/nostrils and removing the manufacturer's logos.  No other changes to the mold are allowed (such as moving legs, tails, heads, etc).  A Custom model is a model that has had the original mold changed (moving legs, tails, heads, etc) as well as being repainted and sometimes haired.  Some models are changed so much that it is almost impossible to tell which mold it started out as!

Another interesting aspect of our hobby is that of Pedigree Assignment (also known as PA).  Many people take the "realism" of our hobby another step by selecting fictitious sires and dams for their models and many have very extensive "bloodlines" researched.  The pedigrees can be composed of both real horse bloodlines and models and MUCH research goes into them.
